May's Album Of The Month: Is There Anybody Out There?

Ian Axel and Chad Vaccerino, better known as A Great Big World, have flown to the top of the charts with their international hit single (ft. Christina Aguilera) 'Say Something'. Said single is on their debut album, released in January of this year. I can not recommend this album enough.

I can't speak for other countries, but the UK was definitely reduced to tears when A Great Big World's heart-wrenching ballad 'Say Something' emerged from the heartbreak that clouded their minds.

You must have heard of them, the New Yorkers who broke the world's heart. But heartbreak and sorrow isn't all they're about; they can do comedy and uplifting too. If you're up for an emotional rollercoaster which will take you from laughter to tears in three quarters of an hour then this is definitely the album for you.

I would compare this band to the likes of Fun. and maybe American Authors. They're indie/pop and the underlying instrument in all their music is the piano.

The tracklisting for this album is perfect to give listeners a taste of their music style but isn't too same-y like some other bands I can think of tend towards.

If you're scanning the tracklist as we speak and find your eyes locked to the song 'Everyone Is Gay' then let me explain. Vaccerino and Axel wrote the song for a friend to promote equality and to help others gain self-esteem. The lyrics are completely positive and a little funny and makes everybody of every sexuality feel comfortable in themselves. It was a pleasant surprise to find such a quirky and inspirational song on this album.

Find their album at HMV, any other major music retail store, iTunes and Spotify! (You know what to do)

Favourite Track: Rockstar; a catchy upbeat track you can sing along to, especially in front of a mirror with a hairbrush. (Contains the lyrics: 'Is there anybody out there?'... which is where the album title came from. Listen out!)
